They sported crew cuts, flashed key chains with the Delhi Police insignia, posed as Armymen and robbed commuters waiting at bus stands in the high-security Lutyens Delhi area.
Four men were arrested from the Ashoka Road-Man Singh Road crossing on Tuesday morning as they were trying to rob a native of Orissa. The accused have been identified as Desraj,Tejpal,Ashish and Zubaer.
Police said the complainant,Sanjeev Kumar, was being beaten up by the accused in their car when two policemen, patrolling the area on a motorcycle, spotted the car and rescued him.
Kumar told the police that he was waiting at Shah Jahan Road to catch a bus for the New Delhi railway station when two of the four walked up to him.
They asked Kumar about his destination. After some time a car stopped near them and the accused told him to get in as they too were headed for the railway station, said V A Gupta,Additional DCP (New Delhi).
Once in the car the accused demanded Kumars wallet and when he refused they started to beat him up,police said. They also threatened him, claiming to be from the Army.
Police said the gang had earlier also targeted commuters in a similar manner. While two members of the gang would strike a conversation with a commuter, the other two would wait in a car. They had a fixed sign language for all the three railway stations. If a gang member touched his ear,it signified that the commuter wanted to go to the Old Delhi station,if nose then Nizamuddin and hair meant New Delhi. Taking the hint, the other members would take the car to the spot and offer a lift, said an officer.
