After a year-long chase,the Delhi Police caught up with the alleged notorious gangster Neeraj Bawana on Monday. The 21-year-old,wanted in a number of extortion cases,was arrested from Rohini,police said.
Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Dharmendra Kumar said,On Monday,around 5 am,we received information that Neeraj will be in Rohini. We arrested him near Crown Plaza,Metro Road,Rohini. Neeraj was on his way to collect money from a person for making further arrangements for his hideouts. Sensing that he was going to be arrested,Neeraj pulled out his gun,but we arrested him before could fire at the police team.
Neeraj was wanted for making an extortion call to MLA Jaswant Rana in May this year. He had demanded Rs 50 lakh from the MLA,police said.
According to police,Neeraj,a resident of Bawana,had made several extortion calls to businessmen and property dealers in the Delhi-NCR region over the last one year. In all,he is wanted in 12 criminal cases nine in Delhi and three in Haryana police said.
For over a year now,both Delhi and Gurgaon police have been trying to nab Neeraj. Recently,a special team under Outer district was formed for the purpose. We searched several of his hideouts in Haryana,UP and Uttarakhand. On several occasions,Neeraj managed to give us the slip, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) B S Jaiswal.
Neeraj carried a cash reward of Rs 50,000 on his head,which was later increased to Rs 1 lakh,police said.
According to police,Neeraj turned to small crimes after dropping out of school. He was earlier part of the Naveen Bali gang,but later began operating his own gang. On May 24,this year, three members of Neerajs gang,who allegedly operated as contract killers,were arrested by the Crime Branch.
Six pistols and 50 magazines were seized from them.
