Cracking down on a racket allegedly selling fake drugs in the name of international branded medicines pertaining to diabetes and migraine along with antibiotics and other painkillers, the crime branch of Delhi Police has arrested 10 people from Shamli and Ghaziabad over the last one week.

Police said the accused were selling the drugs, manufactured in factories situated in Shamli and Ghaziabad, to retailers in Delhi. The arrested persons included wholesalers and pharmacists. Police said the seized medicines were worth crores of rupees.

Police said keeping in view the sharp surge in the supply of fake medicines in the retail markets in the Capital, officers from the Crime Branch were tasked to develop inputs about illegal medicine rackets active in Delhi and NCR, following which officers received specific inputs regarding fake medicines being supplied by one Upkar alias Manni and Mukesh to various medical stores.

Said Additional CP (Crime) Sanjay Bhatia, “During the operation, a team led by Inspector Pawan Kumar along with medical representatives of Johnson & Johnson and Lupin companies intercepted a van under Tilak Bridge and overpowered two persons whose identity was later revealed as Manni and Jasdeep.”

“During the search, huge quantities of fake Ultracet, Amaryl, Gluconorm, and Defcort tablets were recovered. On interrogation, Manni revealed that the recovered medicines were spurious ones and named one Abdul Basit, a resident of Geeta Colony, as the source of supply of the Ultracet tablets. Vikas, a resident of Mandoli, was named as the source of the rest of the medicines,” said the officer.

It was revealed that the Ultracet medicine was being manufactured in a factory in Sunder Nagar in Himachal Pradesh by one Anil Kumar who was an employee of Surender Malik, another accused. “These fake medicines are then transported through courier, i.e., Nitco Roadways from Sunder Nagar to Panipat, Haryana, in the name of a fake firm — Aggarwal Ayurvedic. Parwez, another accused, prepared a fake stamp in the name of the firm and collected the spurious medicines from Nitco Roadways in Panipat. He, thereafter, used to sell the said spurious Ultracet medicines to Daniyal Ali who possesses a diploma in Pharmacy,” said the officer.

Ali used to sell the spurious Ultracet medicines to Basit who runs ‘ASR medical store’ in Geeta Colony, said police. “Basit used to sell the said spurious Ultracet medicines from his medical store and also to Manni in a bulk quantity…,” they added.
