Wrong parking hits new high,four-fold rise in challans this year

Over 1,200 wrong parking stickers issued this year

In the past one year the number of challans issued on account of wrong parking near malls, hotels and industrial area have increased by four times. While 1,237 challans were issued from September 2011 to August last, the number of challans for wrong parking from August last till date are 4,464.

Interestingly, till last August not even a single wrong parking sticker was issued by the Chandigarh Traffic Police. However, from last August till now,1,218 stickers for wrong parking of vehicles have been issued.

A wrong parking sticker is pasted on a vehicle which is found wrongly parked. If the offender does not pay the penalty in the Traffic Police Lines,Sector 29,he is issued a notice by the Traffic Police within few weeks directing him to pay the penalty. If he still does not,he is issued a second notice. And if the violator still does not pay the fine, the challan is sent to the Court which can take stern action against the offender and even send him behind bars if the Court summons are not complied with.

As many as 1,614 wrongly parked vehicles in industrial area were issued challans and stickers by the police in the past one year. Outside Elante Mall 1,394 stickers and challans were issued for wrong parking. Another mall where issuance of wrong parking stickers has increased,as compared to last year is Fun Republic Mall. As against five challans issued last year,77 challans for wrong parking were issued outside Fun Republic Mall till now.

To tackle the increasing problem of wrong parking outside Elante Mall, the Chandigarh Police has sent a detailed proposal to the Chandigarh Administration. A multi-storey parking lot at Elante Mall has been proposed by the police. Other than an 82-feet long divider, police have also recommended a one way system in anti-clock wise direction outside Elante Mall.

To reduce the over increasing rush of vehicles, police have written to the Manager of Elante Mall asking him to start making use of its high technology parking facility wherein a vehicle is lifted up in the air and another vehicle can be parked beneath it. The proposal has been sent after a detailed survey of the Elante Mall.

The Chandigarh Police has submitted this information to the Punjab and Haryana High Court in response to a petition pertaining implementation of traffic guidelines. Police told the HC that ‘of the several cranes’ its traffic wing has merely two cranes that are capable of towing away wrongly parked vehicles without causing any damage to them. Police have sent a proposal to procure two more such cranes.
