1 woman from Punjab killed, another critically injured in US shooting; suspect held

The incident took place in Carteret, New Jersey. A 19-year-old teenager of Indian origin has been arrested for the crime, US media reported.

Two women from Punjab were shot by a man of Indian origin in the United States, leaving one dead and the other critically wounded. The incident took place on Wednesday morning outside of a home in Carteret, New Jersey.

US media reports said that 19-year-old Gaurav Gill was arrested in connection with the case and charged with murder.

“Deeply saddened to learn of the tragic demise of Ms. Jasvir Kaur and injuries to Ms. Gagandeep Kaur in a shooting on Roosevelt Av, Cartaret, New Jersey. We offer our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased,” The Consulate General of India in New York said in a post on X on June 14.

Harinder Singh, a US-based Punjabi who hails from Nakodar, informed The Indian Express that the accused Gill hails from Hussainiwala village in Nakodar, while the victims are from Nurmahal in Jalandhar. The deceased, Jasvir, was 29 and married while her cousin Gagandeep Kaur is 20 years old. Gagandeep and the accused were allegedly acquainted.

Following the shooting, both victims were airlifted to nearby hospitals where Jasvir succumbed to her injuries. Authorities are yet to disclose any motive behind the crime or a connection between Gill and the women.
