The Chandigarh Police have arrested four members of a family in Maloya in connection with the death of 30-year-old Jagdeep Kaur, who allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself on Tuesday.

While a case of dowry death has been registered, the woman’s parents claimed it to be a case of murder.

According to the police,Jagdeep’s husband Yadvinder Singh, employed with a local industrial unit, noticed her body hanging from the ceiling fan in their room. He,however, did not take her to hospital. Baljit Kaur,Jagdeep’s mother, said Yadvinder informed them about the death. “We found Jagdeep’s body on the bed. There were strangulation marks around her neck, but not a particle of dust was missing from the fan from which she was claimed to have hanged herself,” she added.

The police, too, suspected foul play and pressed into service a forensic team, which collected samples from the site.

Amandeep, the woman’s brother, alleged that her in-laws had been harassing her for dowry ever since the wedding seven months ago. “We fulfilled most of their demands but they recently started asking for a car. They were harassing my sister,” he alleged.

Sector 39 Station House Office Inspector Janak Rana said: “If further investigations suggest murder, the charge will be added to the FIR.”
