With eye on health,UT to push schools to follow WHO model

The UT administration is planning to launch a pilot testing project for 19 public and private institutions in the first phase.

As part of its initiative to implement the health promotion model as proposed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in city schools,the UT administration is planning to launch a pilot testing project for 19 public and private institutions in the first phase. If successful,the schools will receive a “Health Promoting Schools”(HPS) accreditation.

The WHO model defines an HPS as “a school constantly strengthening its capacity as a healthy setting for living,learning and working.” The Administration aims to cover all schools in the city under the accreditation process rating them as Bronze,Silver,Gold and Platinum on the basis of goals achieved by each of the schools over the next three years.

The project aims at engaging officials from the health and education department in implementing policies that will support each individuals’ self-esteem and provide them with multiple opportunities for health improvement.

At a workshop attended by officials from both the departments today at the UT guest house, Manoj Dhingra,National Programme Manager,Non-communicable disease,WHO-India,discussed public health approach for the prevention of communicable diseases.

Some of the schools chosen include Government Model Senior Secondary School (GMSSS) in sector 10,37,16,41,27,15,35,Karsan,Kaimbwala,Sacred Heart School,St John’s School and St.Kabir Public School in sector 26,Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Sector 25,Bharatiya Vidya Bhavans sector 27,among others.
