The Punjab government on Tuesday filed an affidavit in the Punjab and Haryana High Court categorically stating that it will take proper care of the Quila Mubarak – a historical monument in Bathinda.
The governments affidavit was in response to a public interest litigation (PIL) arising out of suo motu notice taken by the Punjab and Haryana High Court regarding the condition of the monument. Punjab has further stated that in addition to the funds it has released to the ASI ( Archaeological Survey of India ),which has been used for conservation of this monument,it proposes to spend funds received from the Central Government ( Rs 100 crores ) for heritage protection,including for conservation of the Quila Mubarak.
The state government said that it is on the verge of selecting technical consultants for the purpose. The government has also stated in its affidavit that Central Jail of Patiala is also a protected monument,and there is no proposal to demolish either the Quila mubarak or the Central Jail,Patiala. Funds are also being made available for proper care and protection of various other monuments in Patiala,including the medal gallery and Sheesh Mahal.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Arjan Kumar Sikri and Justice Rakesh Kumar Jain on Tuesday appointed Advocate H C Arora as an amicus curiae in the case. Arora has been asked to determine if efforts being made by the government for the conservation of Quila Mubarak are satisfactory. The PIL will come up for resumed hearing on May 3.
