The Haryana Police officer was sentenced to one-and-half-years imprisonment by Additional District and Sessions Judge Gurbir Singh on May 25,while enhancing his previous punishment of six months granted by a lower court in December last year.

It was for the first time that the former Haryana DGP was put behind the bars for a crime committed 20 years ago after which teenager Ruchika committed suicide in 1993,and her family left Panchkula. The trial began in 1998 when Punjab and Haryana High Court ordered a CBI probe on the writ petition filed by Madhu Prakash, mother of Ruchika’s friend Aradhana and the only eyewitness in the incident.

His wife has moved a bail plea in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which will now come up for hearing on Monday.
