THOSE INVOLVED in the violence and arson in Nuh and nearby areas will be made to pay for the damage they have caused, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said on Wednesday, reiterating that all measures were being taken to restore law and order in the state.
Speaking at a press conference in Chandigarh, Khattar said, “The losses will be assessed and people shall be compensated accordingly. There is already an Act in Haryana as per which rioters will have to pay for the losses caused to the government and the people. In the Nuh case also, all those accused found guilty of the damage shall be made to pay for the losses.”
The Chief Minister said the state government, too, shall also compensate the people. “People can fill forms on the state government’s Kshatipurti portal, stating the losses they have suffered. All movable and immovable property losses will be assessed and on the basis of that compensation will be announced. The portal shall remain open till August 18,” he said.
Khattar also asserted that “those found responsible for the clashes shall not be spared at any cost”. After the press conference, he tweeted: “I will not allow the peace and communal harmony of the state to deteriorate at any cost. Every single culprit of the Nuh incident will be brought to book. And every damage will be compensated by the rioters and it will also be recovered from them.”
At least six people died and several private and government properties, including vehicles, burnt down or damaged in the communal clashes that broke out in Nuh on Monday and spread to Gurgaon and nearby areas.
“Six people have died in the violence. About 116 have been arrested and 90 more have been detained and are being questioned about their possible involvement,” Khattar said.
Elaborating on the measures being taken to restore law and order in the area, he said Nuh has been divided into eight zones and eight IPS officers have been deputed per police station across the district. “Director General of Police, ADGP (Law and Order) and other top police officers are stationed at Nuh and are constantly monitoring the situation and taking adequate steps to bring back normalcy,” he said.
Of the 20 companies of central forces deployed in Haryana, 14 are in Nuh, three in Palwal, two in Gurgaon and one in Faridabad.
To prevent re-occurrence of violence in the area, the Chief Minister said, “A permanent battalion of IRB (India Reserve Battalion) shall be stationed in Nuh. We have identified land to accommodate the battalion but till that structure comes up, a temporary arrangement shall be made to accommodate these personnel in Nuh. There are two battalions currently stationed at Bhondsi, out of which one comprising approx 1,000 personnel shall be permanently stationed at Nuh.”
He also announced an enforcement wing to check cow-slaughter and cattle smuggling, which he said is a major issue in the area.
“We have an enforcement wing to check liquor smuggling and power theft. But another enforcement wing comprising 100 personnel shall be deployed across Nuh to check cow-slaughter and cattle smuggling in the area, which is a major issue in Nuh,” he said.
Khattar said Muslim groups shall also be roped in for cattle protection. “There are Muslims who also support cattle-protection. A scheme shall be formulated for Nuh so that communal harmony is not disrupted again.”
