In view of the increasing number of cholera cases reported from Mohali,the measures being taken to check the spread of water-borne diseases in slums and colonies of the city were reviewed at a meeting of Municipal Corporation officials on Friday. The Engineering Wing of Municipal Corporation has been assigned the task of ensuring adequate chlorination of drinking water. Officials were asked to take adequate samples of water from the consumers end in order to ensure the presence of residual chlorine. They will also make sure that there are no complaints of water leakage and waterlogging. Director Health Services M S Bains will oversee the implementation of various provisions of Food Adulteration Act with regard to sale of food items while the Malaria Wing will take adequate steps for fogging during the monsoon season. The dispensaries and health centers adjacent to colonies,meanwhile,will monitor diarrhoea cases being reported,if any,apart from rendering curative treatment. The Medical Officer of Health has been entrusted the task of monitoring the sanitation services including sweeping,collection and removal of garbage on a daily basis and it was also decided to undertake lime dusting around vulnerable places in order to avoid flies and sanitation campaigns to make people aware. NGOs and residents welfare associations will be roped in to seek their co-operation in educating and bringing awareness among residents for maintaining hygiene and cleanliness around their houses. The residents have been advised not to consume stale food,over-ripened fruits/vegetables,cut fruits exposed to dust and flies and water from handpumps. They have also been asked to report to the nearest health centre for medical assistance in case they show any symptoms. 22 more taken ill MOHALI: Twenty-two patients were admitted in the civil hospital on Friday with symptoms of cholera,diarrhoea and gastroenteritis. After 31 patients were discharged today,another 27 patients remain admitted in the hospital,said sources. Teams deployed The UT Health department has stepped up activities for prevention and control of water-borne diseases such as diarrhoea,cholera and gastroenteritis. Special teams have been deployed in various parts of the city to carry out surveillance of suspected cases. Special attention is being given to low lying areas,including Colony No 4,Colony No 5,Mauli Jagran and Dadumajra. Teams with chlorine tablets have also been deployed for distribution in areas where chlorine content is found to be less in the water. Regular monitoring of water is being carried out by the Engineering Wing,the report of which will be submitted on weekly basis.
