Waiting for justice,Bulbul and family leave Panchayat Bhawan

Even as a final verdict is awaited in the newborn death case at Government Multi-Speciality Hospital (GMSH),Sector 16,Bulbul,the woman who lost her child,and her family members have checked out of the Panchayat Bhawan in Sector 18.

The UT Administration had made arrangements for Bulbul,her husband and children to stay there. Authorities said they had been staying there for almost two months but were not aware of there whereabouts now.

UT Home and Health Secretary Ram Niwas,too,claimed ignorance on the whereabouts of the family.

“Bulbul and her family were given accommodation for 15 days,but were allowed to stay on since the inquiry was on. The family,too,wanted a shelter while they waited for their son to be operated upon at PGI. We had also arranged Rs 20,000 for the treatment of their son. The family was to vacate the premises after that,” said Additional Deputy Commissioner P S Shergill.

Bulbul’s son was operated upon a few days ago.

A resident of Bihar,Bulbul had given birth to a child at the OPD counter of the hospital while standing in a queue on July 21. The newborn died after its head hit the ground. While the inquiry into the incident was being conducted,the UT Administration had made arrangements for the family’s stay at the Panchayat Bhawan. According to records,they left on Monday evening. Bills amounting to around

Rs 50,000 are pending that have to be cleared by the Administration.

On August 30,stones were pelted at their room,and the family was shifted to another room — from room number 121 to 127.

Following the death due to negligence in the hospital,a number of senior and junior doctors,all students of Diplomate of National Board,were indicted in the inquiry report conducted by Additional Deputy Commissioner P S Shergill. The Director-Principal of Government Medical College Hospital,Sector 32,had recommended strict action against the doctors and other staff members of the hospital.

The UT legal remembrancer had recommended registration of a criminal case against the doctors. The recommendations had led to protests at GMSH. The DNB doctors had met the UT Administrator with the plea that they acted on the directions of senior doctors and criminal proceedings should not be initiated against them. For almost a fortnight the UT Adviser Pradip Mehra has been calling meetings to discuss the recommendations. However,the final decision has not been taken yet.
