Villagers admit mistake: ‘Orissa man not Kala Kachha member’

Admitting their mistake, residents of Jhampur village on Tuesday gave in writing that they had mistook Ramesh,a labourer from Odisha,as a member of the dreaded ‘Kala Kachha’ gang

Admitting their mistake, residents of Jhampur village on Tuesday gave in writing that they had mistook Ramesh,a labourer from Odisha,as a member of the dreaded ‘Kala Kachha’ gang. The gram panchayat of the village gave an affidavit in this regard to the police. They, however, denied having thrashed Ramesh and said that it was some outsiders who had assaulted him.

Ramesh, who was thrashed mercilessly in Jhampur village on August 18,left for Odisha on Tuesday with his younger brother and a relative, whom the police had contacted a few days ago. They had arrived here on Sunday, the police said. Ramesh was discharged from the hospital in Kharar on Sunday.

Till now,no case has been registered against those who assaulted Ramesh. The police have not been able to identify the assailants.

While talking to Newsline on Saturday,Ramesh had revealed that around 15-20 people had thrashed him with rods and called him a thief. “They also threatened me with swords but did not use them,” he said, adding,“All I want to do right now is go back home.”

Ramesh,a native of Kendrapara district in Odisha, had come to Mohali on August 16 to work as a labourer. However, after his very first night here,he was looted of his belongings. Things changed for the worse when the people in Jhampur village took him to be a Kala Kachha gang member and thrashed him, even filing a complaint against him.
