According to figures obtained from the police department, in the last three and a half years, as much as 71 per cent cases of vehicle theft, 46 per cent cases of burglaries, an equal percentage of thefts and 32 per cent cases of snatching are yet to be solved in Chandigarh.
The police said vehicle thefts pertain to the stealing of four-wheelers, two-wheelers, autorickshaws and e-rickshaws. The cases of theft included stealing of household items, including jewellery, electronic goods, bicycles etc. The burglary cases pertain to stealing of valuables when the owners of the houses were present inside the house and the cases of snatching pertain to the forcefully taken valuables, including gold chains, purses and other valuables.
The data of the period between January 1, 2020, and June 30, 2023, showed that as many as 1,675 cases of vehicle theft out of 2,361 are yet to be solved. Similarly, out of 311 burglaries, 144 are yet to be solved alongside 406 cases of thefts out of 882 cases. Meanwhile, as many as 135 cases of snatching out of 422 are yet to be solved.
The data also showed an increase in the number of cases of vehicle theft, burglary, theft and snatching. According to the figures, 2020 saw 79 cases of snatching, 82 burglaries, 440 vehicle thefts and 168 thefts being reported. In 2021, cases of snatching rose to 122, as many as 91 burglaries were reported besides 487 vehicle thefts and 278 thefts.
In 2022, 142 snatchings, 89 burglaries, 950 vehicle thefts and 303 thefts were reported while in 2023 so far, 79 snatchings, 49 burglaries, 484 vehicle thefts and 133 thefts have been reported.”
A senior Chandigarh police officer on condition of anonymity said, “Indeed, the number of cases has increased over the last four years. However, at the same time, the detection rate of Chandigarh Police is over 50 per cent, particularly in cases of thefts, snatching and burglaries. We are also in the process of improving our detection in view of property-related crimes and those related to motor vehicle thefts.”
