The UT Administration is all set to prepare a data bank of families in the city Below Poverty Line (BPL),with the aim of providing them with health insurance under the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojna (RSBY). It is expected that the scheme will be rolled out on September 1 this year. However, there is no concrete figure of the number of BPL families available after anomalies were found in the survey conducted by the Municipal Corporation.

RSBY is a central government scheme under which health insurance will be provided to BPL families and under which they will be entitled to hospitalization coverage of up to Rs 30,000. This is to ensure that their financial condition is not affected once a member of the family falls sick.

A meeting to undertake this project in the city was held recently under the joint chairmanship of UT Home Secretary and Finance Secretary and attended by various officials. It was decided that data regarding BPL families and unorganised workers will be uploaded by Red Cross which is the nodal agency, and the National Insurance Company (NIC) will do the further enrollment process in two months.

It was further decided that the empanelment of private hospitals should be done by NIC as early as possible. The company will organise sensitisation workshops so as to ensure more enrollment.

The Administration has now asked the Municipal Corporation to hold a meeting of its councillors in order to seek their support for the purpose. The BPL families in the wards of the councillors could be informed about the scheme so that they could enroll.

The last survey conducted by the MC was in the year 2006 by a city-based NGO. However, anomalies were found and no fresh survey was done. For its schemes including the Swarna Jayanti Shehari Rozgar Yojna (SJSRY),the civic body is depending on old figures.

While the city’s population has witnessed an increase over the past one decade, information about the BPL families is yet to be made available.
