With land being scarce in the city, the UT Administration is in the process of fulfilling the demand of governments of Punjab and Haryana for land for constructing houses for its employees in Chandigarh. Small patches of land are being identified at different places in the city for the purpose.
A meeting to discuss the issue was held by UT Finance Secretary V K Singh with other officials of the Administration. The state governments had earlier raised a demand for 100 acres of land in the city for residential purposes. It had been agreed to by the Administrator that some land will be allotted for the use of states.
Officials on Wednesday looked at the areas where land could be made available. Chandigarh is a landlocked city. The allotment of land for various purposes is almost at a halt.
Officials state that small patches of land in different areas are being explored which can be allotted. As per the Master Plan prepared for the city, there are very few vacant patches which are there in the periphery.
The Master Plan has also proposed that the office building of Punjab and Haryana government that are functioning on the ground floors in Sector 17 be shifted to upper storeys. This is to ensure that on the ground floors of showrooms, commercial activity takes place that gives the area a more vibrant look.
