UT bags MoEF’s Indira Vikas Mitra Award

Chandigarh has been selected for the Indira Priyadarshini Vikas Mitra Award for the year 2010 for outstanding work in increasing forest and tree cover in the city.

Chandigarh has been selected for the Indira Priyadarshini Vikas Mitra Award for the year 2010 for outstanding work in increasing forest and tree cover in the city. The award is given by Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF).

The award,which includes a citation,scroll and award money of Rs 5 lakh,will be given at a ceremony in New Delhi on November 19.

According to the State of Forests Report 2007 of the Forest Survey of India,the forest cover of Chandigarh is 43 sq km while another 11 sq km is under tree cover. The green area forms 38 per cent of the total geographical area of the city.

As per the report,the city gained 3 per cent green cover compared to the previous assessment in 2005 and Chandigarh was selected for the award on the basis of the findings of the report.

An official said that while concerns had been raised by environmentalists in the city about the decrease in the green cover,the recognition by the Central government should put those concerns to rest.
