Underground parking lots lie unused, residents say they have no security

Despite a severe parking space crunch, the underground parking lots in the city have failed to find favour with the residents.

Despite a severe parking space crunch, the underground parking lots in the city have failed to find favour with the residents. The chief reason given is the lack of security, especially in the evening.

Underground parking lots are present in Sectors 8 and 17. Recently the Municipal Corporation undertook a drive to clean up these parking lots. In a three-day long drive the parking lots were spruced up.

But since there is a lack of attendants at these lots, there is no one to streamline the parking or ensure safety of vehicles.

A city resident Poonam says,“There is no guarantee of security of vehicles in these lots. The parking attendants also do not guide anyone to park here, even when surface parking lots are full. Mostly, people do not know the facility exists.”

The underground parking lot in Sector 8 has now been handed over to the market association for upkeep. Area councillor Chander Mukhi Sharma says,“The step has been taken in order to encourage the utilisation of underground parking lots. The shopowners would stand to benefit in case more people visit the market. In other markets, including Sector 22,where parking lots are being managed by the market associations, one can see that they being managed more efficiently,” he says.

There have been suggestions that parking attendants be asked to direct people to underground parking lots; there could be some incentives like less parking fees. But most of these ideas have remained merely on the surface.
