Under pressure,HP govt paves way for Rs 311-cr arrear release

Government employees who are due up to Rs 70,000 will now receive the money after Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal cleared the release of arrears due to them after revision of the pay scales recommended by the Sixth Pay Commission.

Government employees who are due up to Rs 70,000 will now receive the money after Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal cleared the release of arrears due to them after revision of the pay scales recommended by the Sixth Pay Commission.

Facing persistent pressure from government employees and pensioners,Dhumal said the arrears totalling Rs 311 crore, will be released to the employees ahead of Diwali. Himachal has already provided financial benefits to the tune of Rs 5,100 crore to its employees so far.

“The notification for the release of 10 per cent of additional arrears has already been issued but the government also took a decision to clear arrears up to Rs 70,000 for the employees. The total expenditure on account of this will be Rs 135 crore”,said Principal Secretary (Home) Srikant Baldi. Baldi added that the benefits released will also cover pensioners.

The pensioners on the other hand claim that 60 per cent of their arrears were still pending and urged the government to take a decision in this regard. The Pensioner’s Welfare Association held a meeting in Mandi district on Monday and accused the state government of delaying the release of a one-time arrear for 95,000 beneficiaries,a few of them aged and ailing. “ It’s frustrating for the pensioners to remain deprived. Some of us have reached such an age that we can’t raise slogans and sit on hunger strikes for our rights. We expect the government to treat the pensioners with respect and pay the dues at one go,” said Hari Chand Gupta, secretary general of the association.
