The citys fire department remained on its toes on Diwali night with 17 incidents of blaze being reported from across the Chandigarh. Goods worth lakhs of rupees were gutted in a kiryana shop in the Sector-26 grain market last night. A fire incident was also reported from near Punjab Chief Ministers residence. However,the fire was brought under control soon.
The first major incident of fire was reported from Krishna Kiryana Shop in Sector 26 which houses booth number 9 and 10,around 1 am. Goods lying in the booths were engulfed in the fire along with two commercial refrigerators,a packaging machine,diesel generator,coconut power and other electrical appliances. Eight fire tenders were pressed into service,the shopkeepers estimated the loss to be around Rs 5 lakh.
The fire department received first call of fire at 1:19 pm ,when a dry grass in Sector 17 caught fire. There after a small place of worship went up in flames in Sector 17,which was extinguished. A wholesale store of readymade garments in Burail village also caught fire.
Goods in a shop in Manimajra were also damaged and a tubewell in the area was also partially damaged in the fire. Besides,a house in Indira Colony also caught fire. However,no one injured.
Besides,fire incidents were reported from shops in Daddu Majra Colony,Kuda Ali Sher and Bapu Dham Colony.
I came to my shop at midnight when I learnt about the fire. All our goods stored have been completely destroyed, said Vishwamadhar Dogra of Krishna Kiryana Shop in Sector 26.
