Two held for duping Chandigarh resident of Rs 4.80 lakh
Police said the complainant had received a call from an individual identifying himself as Cheema from Canada.

The Cyber Crime Cell of the Chandigarh Police arrested two persons, both Bihar natives, for duping a city resident of Rs 4.80 lakh by impersonating their relatives from Canada, police said Tuesday.
Police said the complainant had received a call from an individual identifying himself as Cheema from Canada.
“The caller fraudulently portrayed himself as a relative of the complainant and narrated an incident where he and his friends were harassed by some Canadians in a hotel. In the ensuing altercation, Cheema said, a Canadian national was injured leading to his arrest. The caller (Cheema) then sought financial assistance for legal fees and bail, resulting in the complainant transferring Rs 4.80 lakh to two bank accounts,” police said.
The complainant later learnt that he was duped, and lodged a complaint to the Cyber Cell. Acting on the complaint, police arrested two accused Ravi Kumar and Baljogeshvar, alias Zimmy, both from Bihar.
Briefing modus operandi of the accused, police said the accused had a well-planned scam involving impersonation, emotional manipulation and fabricated stories of distress to convince the victim to transfer large sums of money. Both Ravi Kumar and Baljogeshvar had access to multiple bank accounts to facilitate the fraudulent transactions, police said.
An FIR was registered at the Cyber Crime police station and further investigation is under progress, police added.
