Two die as car crashes into toll plaza on NH-21

An engineer and a foreman were among six persons killed in separate mishaps in different parts of Mohali district during the past 24 hours. A seven-year-old girl was also among the deceased.

Jashandeep Singh (30) of Adarsh Colony in Patiala and Des Raj (35) of Darolidar village in Hamirpur (HP) were killed when a white Maruti Swift car,in which they were travelling,crashed into a locked room of toll plaza on busy Mohali-Kharar National Highway-21 at Ballomajra village,4 km from Kharar,on Monday night.

Balongi SHO Inspector Palwinder Singh told Newsline that neither the cause of accident nor who was on the wheels could be ascertained as no eyewitness was found to the fatal mishap that took place around 11.15 pm.

It was only after the workers at the under-construction mall site,close to the accident spot,heard a loud bang that they rushed outside and saw Jashandeep and Raj,who were working as engineer and foreman with the private company constructing the mall,trapped inside the totally damaged car. The police and the company workers had to cut the mangled remains of the car to pull out the victims but only to be declared dead on arrival at the civil hospital. As per information,both the victims were returning back to the site for their night shift after having meals in Chandigarh. Both were recently married.

Kavita (7) daughter of a migrant labourer Jagpal Singh,presently putting up in a hutment at Sahoran village,was mowed down by a car when she was walking along Kharar-Ropar stretch of NH-21 at Sahoran at around 2 pm. The ‘killer’ car driver fled the spot before anyone could note down its registration number even as the minor girl was declared dead on arrival at civil hospital.

In another road mishap,Jagtar Singh (35) was killed while his brother-in-law Parwinder Singh (22) of Banur in Patiala sustained serious injuries when a recklessly driven unknown vehicle ran over the motorcycle,on which they were riding back home from a Maruti dealership in Chandigarh where they were employed as workers,on Kharar-Banur Road near Bhagomajra village,at around 7 pm. While Jagtar succumbed to his injuries,Parwinder was struggling for life at Chandigarh PGIMER,said IO Ashok Kumar.

A migrant labourer Raju Mangal,working at an under-construction housing project at Chapparchiri village near Mohali,was killed after he slipped and fell on iron bars at the site.

Another migrant looking unknown person was found dead near PTL Chowk in Mohali. With nothing recovered to establish his identity.
