Police said that the killing was the fallout of a "personal rivalry". (Express photo)Two days after 25-year-old Kabaddi player Tejpal Singh of Giddarwindi village, was shot dead in Jagraon town near Ludhiana Rural Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP)’s office, the police Sunday said that it arrested two suspects in the case.
Ludhiana Rural SSP Ankur Gupta said that two suspects- Harpreet Singh alias Honey of Roomi village near Jagraon, and Gagandeep Singh alias Gagan of Killi Chahlan village, Moga, were held. However, their third accomplice Harjobanpreet Singh alias Kala, also of Roomi village, remains absconding.
The daylight killing of Tejpal Singh, a known kabaddi player in Ludhiana district, led to political uproar with the Opposition parties hitting out at the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for the “deteriorating law and order and jungle raj prevailing in the state.”
Police said that the killing was the fallout of a “personal rivalry”. In a statement, Ludhiana Rural Police said that a violent scuffle between two groups led by Tejpal and Harpreet alias Honey, escalated and led to the shootout.
Police said that according to Raghvir Singh, father of the deceased, his son Tejpal and his two friends- Parlabh Singh and Lovedeep Singh, had gone to Mahavir Oil Mills located on Dr Hari Singh Hospital Road, Jagraon on Friday where Harpreet alias Honey and his friend Gagandeep were already waiting. An argument started between both groups which soon turned into physical assault, said police.
Raghvir further told police that Honey soon called his another friend Harjobanpreet Singh alias Kala on the spot along with their other accomplices and they opened an attack on Tejpal and his both friends.
Police said that Honey took out a weapon and opened fire at Tejpal, and a bullet hit him in the chest. Tejpal was rushed to Civil Hospital Jagraon but he succumbed.
Police said according to Raghvir Singh, the main accused Honey nursed a grudge against Parlabh Singh. Around twenty days ago, Parlabh Singh along with his wife and sister had gone shopping at a market in Jagraon where Honey along with his 5/6 accomplices also reached there. Honey allegedly was constantly staring at both women. When Parlabh stared back at them, they all fled. Raghvir Singh said that Honey and his accomplices orchestrated Friday’s attack to take “revenge”. They thrashed Parlabh but when Tejpal objected, they shot him dead.
An FIR in the case was registered under the sections 103, 190 and 191 (3) of BNS and 25/54/59 of Arms Act at Jagraon city police station.
Meanwhile, BJP leader and union minister Ravneet Singh Bittu visited the grieving family, Sunday. He criticized the ruling AAP government for its complete failure to maintain law and order in Punjab. “Such incidents of daylight murders, looting and extortions are happening on a daily basis in the state. Is this a government rule or a jungle raj,” said Bittu.
