Two arrested in ‘lapsed insurance policy’ fraud

The police said that technical analysis of mobile numbers and bank accounts led to the arrest of the accused.

The Cyber Crime Police of Chandigarh has arrested two individuals in connection with a lapsed insurance policy fraud.

The case, registered at Cyber Crime police station, Chandigarh, involves defrauding a resident of Rs 3 lakh by posing as officials of Bajaj Allianz Insurance Company.

As per the police, the accused have been identified as Sanjay Shrivastava (40), a resident in Ghaziabad, UP, and Gaurav (25), a resident in Delhi.

The case came to light when Gurbir Singh Deol, a Chandigarh resident, was cheated of Rs 3 lakh in the name of reviving his lapsed insurance policy.

The police said that technical analysis of mobile numbers and bank accounts led to the arrest of the accused.

On September 19, a raid in Noida and Ghaziabad resulted in the arrest of Sanjay and Gaurav. From their possession, the police recovered multiple mobile phones, SIM cards, ATM cards, and a PAN card.

During interrogation, Sanjay revealed that he had sold multiple bank accounts to Gaurav for Rs 2,000 each, which were later handed over to others on commission. Gaurav disclosed to the police that these accounts and SIM cards were used to commit organised cyber frauds.

Both accused also provided information about a suspected mastermind behind the scam and a network of illegal SIM sellers operating in Noida.
