Chandigarh lad and former Pailan Arrows goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu was among the stars when East Bengal recently defeated reigning I-League champions Salgaocar SC 9-8 in sudden death and won the Super Cup. He joined East Bengal last year and the title was the first in his professional career.

Before joining East Bengal,Gurpeet knew he might have to warm the benches as a fringe player for a while. But hard work cleared the way for him sooner than he had expected. And he did not look back, especially after keeping a clean sheet for the Red and Gold against arch rivals Mohun Bagan in a derby match.

Later, the then East Bengal coach Philipe de Ridder fielded him in several crucial games and he stood rock solid under the bar, soon becoming the team’s first-choice keeper.

“I think I still have to put in a lot more effort and improvise my technique to remain the team’s first-choice keeper. The coach and players have been helpful to me. They point out my mistakes and tell me what to do in different situations,” said Gurpreet who stands tall at 6’4.

Success at the club level has translated to success at the national level too as he made a winning debut in the Indian under-23 team’s 2-1 victory against Myanmmar in February. But Gurpreet knows there is still a long way to go before he can be deemed fit to wear the blue flannel of the Indian football team.

“The team has not gotten the start that we needed,There is still a long way to go and plenty of matches to be played. I am confident that we will do well this year and we will definitely look at winning the I-League title. I just need to make sure I do not concede too many goals and can help the team win,” shared the 19-year-old from Chamkaur Sahib.
