Vendors sitting on pavements, shopowners displaying their wares in corridors and parking lots in markets being occupied by stalls — many sectors were a picture of utter chaos today. As people thronged the markets to make purchases ahead of diwali, there was little space to either walk or park vehicles. Traffic jams were witnessed in many sectors, especially towards the evening.

The Municipal Corporation (MC) gives coupons to shopowners to display their goods outside their shops by setting up stalls for three days. But there were a large number of vendors who put up stalls illegally. With there being no check on such activities, corridors and pavements in the markets were lined with vendors selling a variety of items, including earthen lamps, candles and decoration material.

Although the markets wore a festive look — having been decked up — there was no space for parking So they were parked on the roadside. Among the most popular markets are those in Sectors 18,19,22 which people thronged to make purchases.

The haphazard parking slowed the movement of traffic near some markets. The rehri markets are among the favoured destinations of shoppers. Even on routine days, these markets lack proper parking facilities and are a hub of encroachers. The situation was worse today.

There are no vacant spaces near these markets where vehicles can be parked. Prior to diwali,Chandigarh Police had announced a plan to make certain markets ‘no-vehicle zones’. But the plan failed to take off due to lack of preparations. Police officials claimed that in Sector 18,people were allowed to park cars in the government school of the area to ease the rush.

The situation in some of the markets was such that in case of an emergency,it would have been difficult for fire tenders to enter. The MC Fire and Emergency Services Department deployed fire tenders in those markets identified as sensitive.
