A large number of scholars are heading to the US and UK for internships
The students of the Chandigarh College of Architecture are looking towards the West to enhance their skills. In a trend that has picked up in the recent years,a large number of students opting for summer internship in the US or the UK.
This year,15 final year students out of the batch of 40,have gone overseas for their internships. The training,from July to December,will also give them 600 to 800 euros a month.
Dean Academics J P Singh says,It is a globalised world. Indian architecture is popular in the West. The students apart from learning about the Western architecture also propagate the Indian architecture. There is a healthy exchange of ideas. Once they complete their degree,they have a wider scope to look for jobs in these countries.
The practice of students flying overseas for their placement has increased in the past three to four years. The students make efforts to find places where they would like to pursue their internship,send resumes and are then picked up by companies.
Principal of the college Dr Pradeep Bhagat said all this while it was the individual effort of students but now the college also plans to lend a helping hand.
The college is also contemplating starting a programme in Masters in Architecture for which an approval has been sought from the AICTE and Panjab University. Plans are on the anvil to introduce a modular programme for M Architecture. The duration of the course is 3 years and this course will be run in vacations. A total of ten students will be admitted to the course on the basis of B Arch result and the other admission norms and the courses are yet to be finalised.
The dean says that the purpose of starting this course is to utilize infrastructure to the fullest. The faculty is relatively free during vacations and the prospective candidate would primarily consists of teachers who want to upgrade educational qualification. In addition to this,some city based architects can also join the programme.
