Times Now Navbharat reporter Bhawana Kishore was released on interim bail from Ludhiana Central Jail on Sunday after bail bonds worth Rs 80,000 were furnished in the court of duty magistrate Harmandeep Kaur, according to Kishore’s counsel.

Kishore was arrested on Friday evening, along with video journalist Mrityunjay Kumar and car driver Parminder Singh, on charges of hitting an SC woman named Gagan with their car while she was on her way to the inauguration of an Aam Aadmi clinic. The trio also faced charges under the SC/ST Act for allegedly making casteist remarks toward Gagan. Gagan had injuries to her hand and her mobile had also been broken, said the FIR.

Congress MP Ravneet Singh Bittu and BJP’s state treasurer Gurdev Sharma Debi had already reached outside the jail when Kishore was released. Debi claimed that Kishore had left for Delhi in a private vehicle arranged by her channel, but The Indian Express could not independently confirm this.

Debi said ” I made her speak to her father who hails from Gorakhpur. Afterward, she went to Delhi in a private vehicle arranged by her channel.”

A statement from Times Now Navbharat said Kishore remained strong while in jail and is ready for her next assignment.

Chanchal, the deputy jail superintendent for women’s jail in Ludhiana, told The Indian Express that Kishore had been kept in a reception cell as per the jail manual, and not with the other prisoners. The women’s jail currently has no hardcore prisoners, according to jail authorities.
Kishore’s regular bail hearing will take place in the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday, along with the bail application of Mrityunjay Kumar and Parminder Singh who are still in custody.

Debi and Bittu have both criticized the AAP government for what they see as an attack on press freedom.

Debi said, “We find this case as a totally fabricated one. The case seems to be very weak and we trust the judiciary to do justice in the case. We stand by the fourth pillar of democracy.” Bittu, while taking a photo with Kishore, stated that the government was “attacking the freedom of press.”

Meanwhile, Chaudhary Yashpal, BJP councilor from ward number 8, Sunday went to Valmiki Ghati mohalla to meet people of the area. Chaudhary told The Indian Express,” I found the house of Gagan locked on Sunday morning.” Gagan is a widow who lives with her son and a minor granddaughter in about a 50-square-yard single-story house. Her son Raman drives an e-rickshaw. Gagan wasn’t at home even on Saturday evening and the phone number given by her son remained switched off till the time of filing this report.
