With the Mayor,senior deputy Mayor and the deputy Mayor having proceeded on leave,the residents coming to the civic body with their problems do not have any elected representative to turn to. A large number of people visit the civic body daily to take up their problems with the top officer of the municipal corporation.

People visiting the office of the civic body these days are facing increasing harassment. A group of residents who wanted to submit a representation with the Mayor on Wednesday had to contend with submitting it to her office staff. One of the members of the delegation stated that the mayor and deputies should not proceed on leave at the same time. He stated that atleast one of them should be here to listen to the grievances of the people.

While the Municipal Act does not specify who should be incharge if the mayor is on leave,as a matter of practice,the senior deputy mayor listens to the grievances of the people and conveys these to the officers.

A Congress councillor stated that in case there is an emergency the councillors are here to look into the problems of the people.

In case the Mayor is not here,there is no provision in the Municipal Act that gives powers to the senior deputy mayor.

It is only in case meeting of the general house has to be called that the senior deputy mayor can preside in case the Mayor is notpresent.
