Tapestry of Colours

Different shades and strokes mark “Now,Then,Beyond”,an exhibition of paintings, sculptures and photographs. Organised by Contemporary Delight, this features works of 21 artists who have dabbled with varied themes, from nirvana to nature, time, magnificent architecture and god.

Coming to Chandigarh from Jaipur, the show has already travelled to Maharashtra,Bengal and Haryana. The idea of having travelling shows is to give artists from different cities of India a chance to showcase their works in places other than their home town and also initiate a dialogue through art, says curator Rozy Kaur.

The display is varied. If Basudep Biswas’ bronze figures are rooted in Mohenjodaro and Harappa, and yet able to hold their own in an international forum,Anil Gupta’s Lost Identity is a journey towards life and death. He uses the cycle as a symbol to denote that nothing is permanent. Rupesh Bakamwar has used a roaring beast to project the fragmentation, dissociation and frustration in today’s world and Aniruddha Pundkar attempts to express the love, care and relationship between man and animal on his canvas.

Manish Bobade has gone back to his childhood memories in My Pet,where a dog is painted on a red backdrop. “Its existence and company are a part of my memories,’’ says Bobade. Ragini Sinha’s painting Udaan,on the other hand, has various kites, symbolising a journey to higher space through the sub-conscious. “As an artist,I have come to love freedom — of which the kite is a dynamic symbol,” says Sinha.

If Shyamali Paul dwells on the relationship between nature and women,Sukhwinder Singh paints a landscape complete with trees, water and sky. Isha Bawiskar’s series Aeroplanes takes inspiration from planes made of paper. “I use geographical maps, which look like clouds, and various shades of blue to create an illusion of sky,” he explains.

Now,Then,Beyond is on at Punjab Kala Bhawan,Sector 16,till September 2.
