Taniya steers Chandigarh eves to easy win over Moga

Tanya Bhatia’s purple patch with the bat continued as she smashed a superb unbeaten half-century (58) to steer Chandigarh to an easy six-wicket win over Moga in the Under-19 Women Inter Academy tournament played at Gian Jyoti School in Moga on Friday.

Apart from Taniya,the Chandigarh bowlers also bowled well to restrict the hosts for a modest total. The bowling charge was led by Priyanka Guleria and Rajni Devi who claimed three wickets each. With this win,the Chandigarh team bagged five points including a bonus.

Earlier,the Moga team won the toss and elected to bat first. However,their decision backfired as the Chandigarh bowlers picked up wickets at regular intervals. Amarpal Kaur top scored with 34 runs as Moga were all out for 123 in 39.2 overs. Monika Rani chipped in with 17 runs.

Despite their impressive performance with the ball,they left much more to be desired as they conceded 45 extras,including 43 wides,in the match.

Priyanka was as usual excellent with the ball and picked up three wickets for 48 runs while Rajni also bowled well to bag three wickets for 20 runs. Akriti Kapila took two wickets for 26 runs.

In reply,the Chandigarh eves scored 127 for 4 in 27.3 overs. Taniya looked in superb touch and smashed an unbeaten 92-ball 58 with the help of eight timely boundaries. For Moga,Navneet Kaur (2 for 30) and Sunita Rani (2 for 32) shared the spoils.

In another match,Amritsar thrashed combined team by ten wickets. The combined team won the toss and elected to bat first. Under the overcast conditions and a difficult pitch,their batswomen failed to get going and fell like nine pins. They were eventually all out for mere 43 runs in 30.5 overs.

Neelam was the pick of the bowlers for Amritsar as she single-handedly led to the combined team’s downfall. Bowling an impressive line and length,the wily bowler bagged eights wickets while giving away just nine runs. Her figures read 8 for 9 in ten overs,including five maiden overs.

The Amritsar team easily chased down the target without losing any wicket in 9.1 overs. Priyanka smashed a run-a-ball 23 with the help of one boundary and two mighty sixes,to steer the team to victory. Amritsar picked up five points,including a bonus point,for the victory .

Junior golf training programme from September 7

CHANDIGARH: A two-month weekend junior golf training programme will be conducted at Chandigarh Golf Club from September 7 to October 27 by EGTF certified coach Ajay Gujral. This programme is for children between the age group of 6 to 15 years and will provide all-round development of the junior golfers. The programme will have a total of 16 coaching days spread over these two months and will be conducted on every Saturdays and Sundays between 4 to 5 pm. Members as well as non-members of Chandigarh Golf Club are eligible to enrol. The programme will focus on the fundamentals of the golf game,including basic swing technique,short game instruction and integration of the core values of the golf game ranging from proper etiquette,dress code and good sportsmanship. Those who are interested to enrol may contact coach Ajay Gujral at 9814356013. Registration will be done on a first-come-first-served basis.

Football final postponed

CHANDIGARH: The final match of Chandigarh Junior Girls Football Championship for Dr.Kamesh Bhargava Memorial Trophy scheduled to be played on Friday at St.Stephen’s School in Sector 45,Chandigarh,has been postponed due to heavy rain and the new date will be announced shortly. Defending champions Sacred Heart School,Sector 26 (B Team) were to cross swords with Carmel ConventSchool,Sector 9 eves for the title.

Shooting meet from today

mohali: The Chandigarh Rifle Association (CRA) will organise 38th Chandigarh State Shooting Championship from August 10 to 12 at the Markfed Shooting Ranges,Phase 6 in SAS Nagar. In the two-day event,competitions will be held in the senior men and women youth men’s and women’s and junior boys and girls’ categories. Shooters can take part in .177 air rifle and pistol,.22 rifle,.22 standard pistol,.22 free pisto .22 sports pistol and centre fire pistol events. Entries for the matches wil be accepted till 11am on the opening day of the event at the shooting ranges.
