The Chandigarh police have booked the driver of an SUV for allegedly posing as a judicial magistrate first class and arguing with the traffic police after he was stopped for a violation at a roundabout.
A video of the accused, identified as Prakash Singh, claiming himself to be a judicial officer, went viral on Sunday. The video of nearly six minutes captured the moment when the traffic police asked the SUV to stop. However, the driver drove the vehicle ahead and stopped it improperly.
When the driver got out of the vehicle, the traffic police questioned him about a cloth hanging in front of the number plate that was hiding the registration number. He started arguing with the traffic policemen on duty and made them speak with a higher-ranking official on his phone. However, when asked to show his driving licence, he escaped from the spot.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Senior Superintendent of Chandigarh Traffic Police Sumer Pratap Singh said, “A complaint against the offender was given to the police station in Sector 49, following which an FIR was registered against him.”
Prakash Singh was booked under sections 170 (personating a public servant), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public duties) and 419 (cheating by personation) of the Indian Penal Code, said the police.
The accused was also issued a challan for violating a red light signal and tampering with the number plate. Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Harjit Kaur said his vehicle would be seized.
