Sukhbir wants more funds from Centre for police modernisation

Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal on Wednesday urged the Centre to enhance the amount given to Punjab for modernisation of police forces from Rs 25 crore to Rs 100 crore.

Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal on Wednesday urged the Centre to enhance the amount given to Punjab for modernisation of police forces from Rs 25 crore to Rs 100 crore.

“We need to equip our police force with modern technologies and weaponry to enable them to face the challenges of high-tech crimes. Adequate amount is required from the Centre for this,” said Sukhbir. he was addressing the media after paying his respects to the martyrs of Punjab police on the occasion of Police Martyrs’ Day here.

“Despite the increasing challenges police forces throughout the country face,the Union Government’s total modernisation budget of Rs 1,200 crore for the whole country speaks volumes about the seriousness of the UPA on the issue,” he said.

He asked Punjab DGP P S Gill to prepare an integrated plan for modernisation of security forces,besides suggesting welfare measures.

He also said that the state police would soon set up special security groups on the pattern of the National Security Guard. Expressing concern over the depleting strength of force,he said he had ordered a massive recruitment drive to fill up all vacancies,besides ordering promotion across all categories.
