With an aim to upgrade the sanitation system, officials of the Municipal Corporation have been directed to check the feasibility of dividing the city into zones. The idea was mooted after a recent trip of councillors to Gujarat.

While studying the sanitation model in Surat,it was observed that the city was divided into four zones there and each zone had a central point for garbage collection. Later, the garbage was taken to the waste management plant.

This ensured that the number of trucks going to the garbage plant was reduced as only one truck went from each zone. This,it was said, helped to save fuel and reduce traffic from the already choc-a-bloc roads.

In the city,however,door-to-door garbage collection is undertaken at present. Garbage collectors dump the garbage, picked up from houses,at the Sehaj Safai Kendras which is then taken to the dumping ground or the solid waste management plant.

Mayor Kamlesh said a meeting has been held in this regard with the officials concerned and it would be beneficial for the city if the zoning concept is implemented.
