Jyoti, who lost her parents at the age of seven, secured UT rank 72 in the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) thanks to her grandmother, who struggled to ensure that Jyoti could study and achieve something big in life. Kamla Devi,Jyotis grandmother, washed utensils, cooked food and did cleaning work at various houses to earn a living to make Jyoti and her brother Deepak study in good schools. Jyotis parents perished in an accident when she was just seven and her brother merely four years old. They were taken care of by their grandmother ever since. Whenever they asked about their parents,Kamla used to tell them that they had gone to America and would return soon. To make Jyoti believe her tale,Kamla used to write letters posing as Jyotis mother and post them home herself. But Kamla could not hide the death of their parents from Jyoti forever. One day Jyoti found the newspaper which had carried the news of her parents death. Her grandmother had preserved it. Today Kamla is proud of her granddaughter, who also cleared her class XII exams with 76 per cent from AKSIPS,Sector 41. Kamla said,Jyoti loves to remain busy doing self-study all the time. I never allowed her to do any household work,I always wanted her to study so that she could fulfill her mothers dream. Jyoti devised a schedule where she devoted five to six hours every day for AIEEE without hampering her school studies. Jyotis hard work bore fruit and she praised her chemistry teacher who taught her and also encouraged her to study harder. She had applied for admission to engineering institutes affiliated to Panjab University and is awaiting counselling. Among all the colleges,I have always aimed for PEC University of Technology, she said.
