It was supposed to be an exciting match between two rivals -St Stephen’s and St John’s-but as the game progressed the spectators assembled there could see who had the upper hand in the match. In the end it was the former who lifted the Mir Iqbal Hussain Trophy for Under-15 boys Football Tournament after thrashing St John’s 4-0 in the final at the Sector 17 Football stadium on Friday.
Going in the final match as favourites,St Stephen’s players displayed an organised game and mounted pressure on the opposition team from the beginning. Their forwards made numerous attacks in the St John’s territory and converted most of the chances that came their way.
Playing an attacking game right from the beginning,Stephen’s gained lead in the eighth minute of the match when a 25 yarder swirling free kick from Jasbir went past a diving St John’s keeper into the net. Bolstered by the strike,St Stephen’s upped the ante and was rewarded once again in the 20th minute. Displaying superb coordination between them,Bikramjit and Jimmy moved into St John’s half and Jimmy’s floater from 20 yards sailed into the net, once again foxing the keeper.
St John’s ,on the other hand, had few good tries but Stephen’s goalkeeper Rahul Chadha made good saves. In the 20th minute,Krishna initiated a move and passed the ball to Ameen who unleashed a powerful shot which missed the target narrowly.
Once again occupying the ground after the breather,Stephen’s continued to play an aggressive game. An unmarked Hurdity Kohli jumped high and connected Wongoing’s cross well as his header raced into the net in the 59th minute of the match. Hurdity had a good match as he assisted in his team’s fourth goal. Kohli started the move and passed it to Jimmy who slipped the ball to Suraj Thapa whose scorching drive caught St John’s defenders napping.
Midway through the second half,St Johns Harshit blasted a powerful free kick from 30 yards. However, his drive was punched over by Stephen’s goalkeeper Rahul Chadha at the expense of a corner. Then Harshit initiated a move from the right flank. He passed it to Parseech who slipped it to Sarfraz whose shot was blocked by a defender. Before any damage could be done off the rebound by Ameen,Stephen’s goalkeeper Rahul Chadha made a fine save.
