Spate of cases leaves govt on backfoot

The ruling Shiromani Akali Dal and Bhartiya Janata Party government has faced one embarrassment after the other in the recent past. The arrest of Chief Parliamentary Secretary (CPS) Raj Khurana by the CBI on Thursday was preceded by the conviction of another CPS,Sohan Singh Thandal,in a corruption case while another Akali leader was recently booked for murder in Jalandhar.

These incidents have put the ruling alliance of SAD-BJP on the backfoot with with just 10 months to go for the Assembly elections in the state. The opposition Congress is demanding dismissal of the government.

Last month,Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) councillor from Jalandhar,who is also the nephew of ruling SAD MLA from Adampur Sarabjit Singh Makkar,shot dead his 31-year-old childhood friend,who was the only son of a hotelier of Jalandhar, at a roadside restaurant in Model Town market. The deceased,Gurkirat Singh alias Gikki,was looking after the hotel business of his father,Rajbir Singh. His murder led to widespread protests in Jalandhar.

Another MLA accused of murder and hatching conspiracy is Shiromani Akali Dal MLA from Banga,Mohan Lal Banga,who is also the son of Cabinet minister for technical education Swarna Ram.

The state police has booked Banga,his wife Santosh,who is inspector in excise and taxation department and presently posted at Dera Bassi,his mother Parkash Kaur (wife of Cabinet minister Swarna Ram) and Jaswinder,the PA of MLA on murder charges of Jagdish Mehmi,sapanch of Behram village and close relative of the SAD MLA,and also for hatching a conspiracy against the deceased sarpanch.
