SOPU,PUSU members clash again

This is the third such incident at UIET in the past few days.

Members of the Students’ Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU) and Panjab University Students’ Union (PUSU) clashed yet again near the University Institute Engineering and Technology (UIET) Department of Panjab University on Thursday afternoon. This is the third such incident at UIET in the past few days.

The incident occurred around 1.30 pm when both the parties reached the department for campaigning. The police had assigned the time slot of 1 pm to 1.30 pm for campaigning to SOPU and the next half an hour to PUSU. About 1.30 pm,during the change of slot, both parties were present at the department, and a scuffle ensued.

The SOPU leaders alleged that the constable present on duty,Sanjeev Kumar, was being rude to them and was partial towards the members of the other party. SOPU president Manoj Lubana was rounded up by the police and released later. The police said that he was interfering with the briefing session of the police by shouting out slogans.

The constable, against whom the complaint was made, was also removed from duty there. Sector 11 SHO Gurmukh Singh said,“We are inquiring into the matter and will ensure that necessary action is taken.”

After about another hour, both the parties started active campaigning again at UIET amidst heavy rain, chanting slogans outside the department canteen. The police had to intervene again.
