Snatching incidents on rise, cops say policing being improved

Snatching incidents have been on the rise over the past few days in the city, particularly in the southern sectors.

Snatching incidents have been on the rise over the past few days in the city, particularly in the southern sectors. From January this year till June,UT Police have registered more than 90 cases of snatching, with elderly women being the victims in most of the cases.

Jaspal Singh,Station House Officer (SHO),Sector-31 police station said: “Till now 20 cases have been reported to our police station out of which 13 have been solved. These snatchers come from Ramdarbar and Mauli Jagran on stolen motorbikes or motorbikes bearing fake number plates. Then they identify 2-3 spots and roam around to ensure that there is no risk of getting caught”.

“Between 2 pm to 4 pm there were only one or two cops in the beat box while others were on break. The night patrolling is called off at 5 am,while the next shift arrives at 8:30 am. This provides snatchers ideal time to get on with their business. Taking this into notice, our team assembles in a city park in civvies and starts jogging. In the process they split into small groups of 4-5 and work out at various locations. Finally the team reassembles at 7 am and is let off,” Jaspal further added.

While 14 cases of snatching were reported in Sector 34 police station,of which, four were solved,22 cases were reported at the Sector 39 police station,of which,10 have been solved.
