In a major embarrassment to the Chandigarh Police,a youth on a Honda Eterno scooter created ruckus in the city by committing a series of eight snatchings in quick succession on Saturday morning. The police control room received eight calls from women in quick succession the first call was received at 11 am and the last at 1.30 pm. None of the victims could note down the registration number of the scooter. The police was clueless about the identity of the accused till the filing of this report. The snatcher seemed to have started his operation in Sector 22,and proceeded through Sectors 38,43,35,15,19 and 32. Sector 49 was the last sector on his route. In every sector,he targeted women. The first call was received from Saroj Devi,a resident of Sector 22. Saroj had come out of her house to hand over garbage when a youth wearing a helmet came on a black Honda Eterno and snatched her gold chain. Saroj shouted for help but the youth escaped in no time. A case has been registered in Sector-17 police station. The second call was received from Sakshi,whose purse was snatched near the CRP Complex in Sector 43. Sakshi was on foot when the incident took place. The police did not register a case in the matter,as the snatcher threw the purse at some distance. Kewal Kaushal was the next victim. Kewal was in the Sector-35 market with her husband when the incident took place. The snatcher fled with her purse when she was in the parking lot. A case has been registered in Sector-36 police station. The police said another person was seen on the scooter this time. Subsequently,Renu was attacked by the accused. Renu was driving her Honda Activa scooter in Sector 15 when a youth wearing a black jacket made a snatching bid. Renu fell on the ground and the snatcher fled with her purse and mobile. The girl sustained minor injuries in the attack. The girl said she did not want to register a case, Inspector Sukhbir Rana,SHO of the Sector-11 police station,said. In the seventh incident,the purse of Alka Devi,a resident of Sector 19,was snatched. The victim was returning from the market when the incident took place. The last call was received from Nidhi,a resident of Pushpak Complex in Sector 49. Nidhi had stepped out of an autorickshaw when the youth snatched her purse. A case has been registered in Sector-34 police station. The incidents left the police red-faced. It seems to be the handiwork of a gang. We have got some clues and are making efforts to trace the accused, UT SSP S S Srivastava said. Ninth case in Sec 25 Another snatching incident was reported in the evening. This time,the accused came on a bike. The incident took place on the road dividing sectors 25 and 38. Two youths snatched the purse of Puja who was returning from office on a scooter. Her friend Neetu was driving. A case of snatching has been registered in Sector-39 police station.
