Chandigarh Police on Friday have managed to crack a case of mobile phone snatching and arrest the perpetrator within eight hours owing to the Smart City CCTV cameras that have been installed across the city.
According to the police, a 22-year-old motorcyclist was arrested within eight hours of having snatched a mobile phone from near CRPF Camp, Sector 43, Friday. The accused was identified as Aman Saroha of Surja Khera village, near Narwana, Jind.
As per investigators, Saroha lived with one of his relatives in Chandigarh and is currently unemployed and was looking for a job. He snatched the cell phone from a pedestrian, identified as Sonu, a daily wager, around 8.30 am on Friday.
Police said that Sonu later called the police control room using the cell phone of someone else and informed about the incident.
“We scrutinised the CCTV cameras and ascertained that a Haryana registered motorcycle was `used in the crime. The address of the bike was tracked and we found it to be in Chandigarh. Aman Saroha tried to evade the police but failed. We arrested the suspect around 2 pm. We have seized the motorcycle, which was used in the crime,” Inspector Jaspal Singh Bhullar, SHO of Police Station 36, said.
Police said that the recovered cell phone will be handed over to Sonu after completing all legal formalities. A case was registered at Sector 36 police station.
Meanwhile, in a separate case, the police have arrested two men for riding a stolen motorcycle bearing a fake registration number plate from near the Rally Ground, Sector 25. The arrested accused were identified as Vishal, 23, and Sajid, 32, of Sector 25 colony.
Police said a sharp-edged weapon was also recovered from the possession of the duo. The accused were presented before a court later, and sent to prison.
