Shivratri celebrations take off in Mandi

The weeklong Shivratri celebrations,a popular religious event in Mandi,got off to an impressive start after the arrival of the main deity,Kamrunag,on Friday.

The weeklong Shivratri celebrations,a popular religious event in Mandi,got off to an impressive start after the arrival of the main deity,Kamrunag,on Friday.

Mandi Deputy Commissioner Amandeep Garg,who heads the organising committee of the festival,performed a puja at Raj Madhav temple. He will escort a religious procession,Jaleb,on Saturday to mark formal beginning of the celebrations.

Public Works Minister Gulab Singh Thakur will be the chief guest at the celebrations in the absence of Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal,who is currently on a trip to the US and Costa Rica.

Garg said: “Besides all religious traditions and rituals,which will be followed during the celebrations,effort has been made to broaden the scope of the festival to make it an international event.”

Cultural evenings will also be held during the week. In a first,a troupe from Kazakhstan will perform at the festival.

Another significant aspect of the festival will be the presence of the Union Ministry of Steel,which has taken space on rent to set up its stalls.

Union Minister for Steel Virbhadra Singh will reach Mandi on February 17 to join the celebrations.

Located on the bank of Beas river and once the capital town of a princely state,Mandi is often described as Chhoti Kashi of Himachal.
