A day after the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) accepted Sukhbir Singh Badal’s resignation as the party chief and announced that it would start a new membership drive and hold elections for the post of new president, the Sri Akal Takht Sahib Jathedar, Giani Raghbir Singh, said on Saturday that the party was adopting a “dilly-dallying” approach on implementing the religious body’s December 2 edict.

Speaking to the media in Amritsar on Saturday, Singh welcomed the acceptance of Badal’s resignation but maintained that the seven-member committee announced by the Akal Takht on December 2 still stands. “The seven-member committee has not been dissolved and the decision still stands. The committee should be working,” he said.

The seven-member committee has not been incorporated by SAD(B) yet due to potential constitutional and legal challenges if a religious body’s directive is applied to a political party.

“There should be no delay with regards to the seven-member committee. If this committee was not mentioned or made operative in yesterday’s SAD(B) meeting, we can say that a dilly-dallying approach is being adopted. It is good that steps are being taken to begin new membership but the seven-member committee stands,” the Jathedar reiterated.

After meeting the Jathedar on Wednesday, SAD(B) leader Daljit Singh Cheema had claimed that the party delegation had convinced Singh that the seven-member committee could not run the membership drive.

On Saturday, however, the Jathedar said, “I was provided some documents during the meeting related to Election Commission. But nothing was given to be under signature.”

The Jathedar had formed the seven-member committee to start a membership drive as part of the SAD(B)’s reorganisation.
