Despite Sheetal Angural’s U-turn, Punjab Speaker accepts his resignation as Jalandhar West MLA

File photo of MLA Sheetal Angural joining the BJP. (Express Photo by Gajendra Yadav)Punjab Legislative Assembly speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan on Monday accepted the resignation of Jalandhar West MLA Sheetal Angural, a day after he urged the Speaker to allow him to withdraw his resignation.
Sources said that the Speaker had accepted Angural’s resignation more than two months after he quit the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to join the BJP, saying he was tired of the AAP. His resignation will now necessitate a by-poll in Jalandhar West.
Angural said that the Speaker had called him and told him about discussing the issue on June 11 but then went to accept the resignation. I will now go to the court. How can they do this to me?” he asked.
Angural joined the BJP on March 27, along with AAP MP Sushil Kumar Rinku from Jalandhar. Rinku’s resignation, however, has not yet been accepted.
Sandhwan said he would make an official announcement about the matter sometime.
A day after Angural had defected to the BJP, his pictures with an alleged kingpin of a UK-based drug cartel, Manish alias Mani Thakur, surfaced on social media. The pictures showed Thakur hugging Angural.
Angural had said that Mani Thakur was known to him and helped in my election campaign, including the 2022 Assembly elections. “But he went abroad 10 months ago. Now, I do not know what he was doing after moving abroad. That is not my responsibility,” Angural had said.
On June 1, Jalandhar witnessed a multi-cornered contest in Lok Sabha elections 2024 between the Congress’s Charanjit Singh Channi, the BJP’s Sushil Kumar Rinku, AAP’s Pawan Kumar Tinu, and Shirmani Akali Dal’s Mohinder Singh Kaypee.
