After filing an FIR against an unidentified woman posing as a doctor who injected an unknown substance into patient Harmeet Kaur in the gynae ward of Nehru Hospital, PGIMER, the UT Police has formally requested the PGI authorities to establish a board or committee to investigate the incident. The police, in a letter addressed to the PGIMER Medical Superintendent on Sunday, emphasised the urgency of providing a detailed report of their findings.

Simultaneously, PGIMER has been asked to furnish information regarding any adverse effects on the health of patient Harmeet Kaur following the administration of the unknown injection.

A source said, “Efforts are being made to identify the suspect woman by showing her picture to security guards, staff nurses, doctors and others within PGIMER. So far, no one has come forward to claim recognition, prompting a thorough review of former employees’ records at PGI.”

The letter to the PGI Medical Superintendent outlined several key inquiries, including the possibility of any unknown individuals, particularly women or doctors, visiting patients and administering injections in the gynae ward at Nehru Hospital. A police officer said, “We were informed that almost all CCTV cameras installed in Nehru Hospital were damaged in the recent fire accident in a particular block. The investigation is going on. The family background of the victim, Harmeet Kaur, who has an inter-caste marriage, has been thoroughly examined. A statement issued by PGI late Sunday night said that the police are investigating the matter and whatever inputs the police sought will be provided. As the matter is still under investigation, it is difficult to say anything conclusive. The patient was referred to the institute after three days of delivery. She had excessive bleeding after delivery and developed infection (puerperal sepsis) and acute kidney failure.

She had received dialysis before the referral to PGI and was referred with acute kidney injury, absent urine output and multiorgan dysfunction.

On arrival, the bleeding was controlled, the patient was shifted to ICU and dialysis was performed. She has been receiving repeated dialysis and is at present on a ventilator and doctors are closely monitoring the patient.
