Schools across Punjab reopened Monday, a week after they were ordered shut on July 10 following unrelenting rains and floods. However, according to the data accessed from the state education department, at least 164 schools across 12 districts are still closed due to flooding, damaged infrastructure, or because they were turned into relief centres for flood-hit people. There are nearly 19,110 government schools in Punjab including primary, middle, high and senior secondary.

Education minister Harjot Singh Bains had on Sunday directed deputy commissioners to declare closure of schools at their own level in flood-hit areas.

According to the data compiled by the education department, with 44 schools still closed, Sangrur tops the list followed by Patiala (35), Mansa (17), Kapurthala (16), Jalandhar (15), Fazilka (9), Hoshiarpur (8), Ropar (7), Faridkot (4), Mohali (4), Ferozepur (2), and Moga (2).
