Schools, colleges across Punjab to remain closed till September 7 due to floods, heavy rain

Schools in Punjab have been closed since August 27 due to torrential rain. Education Minister Harjot Bains had also issued a warning to private educational institutions over complaints that staff members were still being called in for duty.

The Punjab Government has extended the closure of all schools, colleges, universities, and other educational institutions in the state till September 7 due to heavy rain which has triggered floods across the region.

In a post on X, state Education Minister Harjot Bains announced: “In accordance with the directives of the Honorable Chief Minister of Punjab Bhagwant Singh Mann Ji, keeping in view the flood situation in Punjab, holidays have been declared in all government/aided/recognised/private schools/colleges/universities and polytechnic colleges in the state until September 7, 2025. Everyone is requested to fully comply with the instructions issued by the local administration.”

Schools in Punjab have been closed since August 27 due to heavy rain, while on Tuesday, the government announced the closure of colleges and universities till Wednesday (September 3). Now all educational institutions will remain closed till September 7.

Bains had also issued a strict warning to private schools and institutions, stating that complaints were being received that they were still calling staff members for work. He said strict action will be taken if private institutions do not follow the government’s directions.

Meanwhile, at least 30 people have died across the state, even as the government declared all districts of Punjab to be flood-hit. Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Kapurthala, and Tarn Taran districts are currently battling extreme floods.

In Gurdaspur’s Daburi, the campus of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya was flooded, and more than 400 people, including students and staff, were rescued on August 27. The school had been opened despite the government’s directions against doing so.

As per government figures, over 1,400 villages are inundated across the state at present, and around 3 lakh acres of farmland have submerged. Over 3.5 lakh people have been affected by the devastation. Rescue and relief efforts are underway with the help of the Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and the Border Security Force (BSF), and nearly 20,000 people have been rescued so far.
