The Supreme Court on Monday asked Government Medical College and Hospital at Sector 32 (GMCH-32) why the third counselling of NEET postgraduate (PG) exam has not been done yet, and what clarification is needed in the January 2025 verdict.
The third round of NEET PG counselling was scheduled for February 5 at GMCH-32, but was postponed indefinitely after the top court verdict on January 29, which barred domicile-based reservation in postgraduate medical admissions under the state quota. The Indian Express previously quoted Director-Principal of GMCH-32 A K Atri, who said 35 seats of the state quota are vacant, but due to the Supreme Court’s decision the third round of counselling could not be done.
The Supreme Court, while clarifying its earlier verdict, said that there will be no domicile state quota and admission will be based on 50 per cent all India and 50 per cent institutional (IP) quota. It also ordered GMCH-32 to conduct the third round of PG counselling.
Atri said the institute is waiting for the court order to be uploaded and then a decision will be taken on the date for the third counselling. According to a senior professor, as the top court has disposed and dismissed the case, the third round of counselling will be done in about 10 days, as 38 seats are empty, and Himachal and Haryana have already completed the counselling based on the same prospectus as the two counsellings done before the SC order, ensuring a timely process.
The counselling for the all India quota has already been completed, and the students selected there have taken admission in the respective institutes, while many students who had chosen GMCH-32 are awaiting counselling.
“With the judgement, we will not waste a year, and it is a big relief for us,” shared a student.
