The central government has granted administrative approval of Rs 65 crore for the long-awaited railway overbridge at the Dhakoli crossing on the Ambala-Chandigarh section in Zirakpur, Rajya Sabha member Satnam Singh Sandhu announced here on Friday.
The project has been cleared following the persistent efforts of the URWA Residents Welfare Association.
Calling the Dhakoli railway crossing the “lifeline” of the area, BJP leader and activists in Dera Bassi Manpreet Bunny Sandhu said, “The railway crossing gate closes nearly 42 times a day, resulting in massive traffic jams and hours-long delays. The overbridge will offer a permanent solution to traffic chaos and make commuting easier.”
URWA president Kulbhushan Sharma said, “The association had been pushing the project for years despite repeated technical obstacles. About two months ago, the matter was taken up with Sandhu, who discussed it with MP Satnam Singh Sandhu and escalated it to the railway minister. The residents’ concerns were presented in detail, leading to their inclusion in the central scheme and final administrative nod.”
“Earlier proposals at the state level failed to get clearance. With fresh approval, a new project report will be prepared and submitted to New Delhi. The overbridge construction work is expected to begin once final clearance is issued by the Baroda House,” the BJP leader added.
