Ranga, at present, is in the custody of Chandigarh Police which had secured his remand to question him in connection to three murders dating back to 2019 that had taken place in the UT. Described as the mastermind in last year’s RPG attack on Punjab Intelligence Department Headquarters, Ranga was arrested by the National Investigation Agency from Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur when he returned from Nepal on January 26 this year.
“We obtained custody of the RPG terror attack accused, Deepak Ranga, last week. Apart from accepting his involvement in three murder cases in Chandigarh in 2019, he has so far also disclosed to us that after the terrorist attack on the Punjab Police Intelligence Headquarters last eyar, he along with his associate, Divanshu, had escaped to Nepal. There, Ranga got married to a Nepali woman and started living there. He had received around Rs 10 to 15 lakh from Pakistan based Harvinder Singh Rinda after the terror attack,” said Inspector Rajiv Kumar, in-charge of Crime Branch, Chandigarh.
Police said Ranga has also confessed to his involvment in the killing of two B.Sc students as well as one other person — Rajveer alias Sonu Shah. The students and Sonu Shah were murdered separately in 2019.
Police said though Ranga claimed that he had opened fire on the two students — Vineet Kumar and Ajay Sharma — in Sector 15, he had only fired in the air in case of Sonu Shah and does not know who ultimately shot Shah dead. The crime branch had arrested at least six accused, including Lawrence Bishnoi, and Raju Basodi, in connection with Sonu Shah’s murder in 2021.
When the killings took place, Ranga was a member of the Lawrence Bishnoi and Raju Basodi gang.
Later, he shifted his loyalty to the gang of Pakistan-based terrorist, Harvinder Singh Rinda, and Canada-based gangster-turned-terrorist, Lakhbir Singh Sandhu aka Landa.
